Where to Stay in Labuan Bajo & Flores: Gateway to Komodo
Flores is a long, mountainous island stretching 380 km east from the Komodo archipelago to the Ende region. Most visitors fly into Labuan Bajo at the western tip and treat it as a base for Komodo National Park boat trips, but the island rewards those who travel further — the coffee highlands around Bajawa, the volcanic crater lakes at Kelimutu near Moni, and the traditional Ngada villages along the central spine are genuinely rewarding stops on a slower east-west traverse.
See our Labuan Bajo travel hub and the Kelimutu crater lakes guide for activity detail.
Labuan Bajo — Main Harbour Strip
Labuan Bajo’s waterfront strip runs along Jalan Soekarno Hatta, overlooking a bay dotted with forested islands that belong to Komodo National Park. The town itself is small — the main restaurant and accommodation strip is walkable in 30 minutes end to end — but it has developed rapidly since being designated one of Indonesia’s “Five Super Priority Destinations” and receiving significant infrastructure investment since 2021.
The central waterfront area suits most visitors. You can walk to the boat charter offices for Komodo day trips and liveaboard departures, and most restaurants and dive shops are within easy reach.
Budget guesthouses and losmen on and behind the main strip run approximately IDR 200,000–400,000/night for basic rooms with fan or air conditioning. Quality has improved in the past few years — older, cheaper guesthouses are now interspersed with newer, better-built options at similar price points. Read recent reviews carefully.
Mid-range hotels along the waterfront and on the lanes immediately behind it run IDR 400,000–1,000,000/night. A growing number of these have pools, in-house restaurants, and reliable WiFi — notably above average for a town of this size.
Golo Hilltop Hotel is a well-regarded boutique option set above the town on the hill overlooking the bay — a quieter location with panoramic views and a pool. Rates from approximately USD 80–120/night as of 2026. The walk down to the harbour strip takes about 10 minutes; a short ojek ride covers the uphill return.
Plataran Komodo Resort occupies a position above the harbour with sea-view villas, a large pool, and one of the better restaurant operations in the area. Rates from approximately USD 250–400/night as of 2026. It is the clearest step into genuine luxury accommodation available in Labuan Bajo and is consistently well-reviewed.
Ayana Komodo Waecicu Beach opened in 2022 and brought a higher tier of international hotel standards to the area — spa, multiple restaurants, beachfront position, and service levels consistent with the AYANA group’s other Indonesian properties. Rates from approximately USD 300/night as of 2026.
Bukit Pramuka (Hilltop Area)
The hill above Labuan Bajo — Bukit Pramuka — hosts a cluster of guesthouses, villas, and a few boutique properties set among trees with views across the bay and the islands beyond. The setting is quieter than the harbour strip and the views are consistently good, particularly at sunset.
Access requires a scooter or short ojek ride into town (10–15 minutes). For visitors doing an extended Flores stay rather than pure day trips, the hilltop’s quieter atmosphere can be worth the slight inconvenience.
Guesthouses here run IDR 300,000–600,000/night; villa rentals with private pools start from approximately IDR 800,000–1,500,000/night.
Kampung Air
Kampung Air is the fishing village at the western end of the harbour, where the local Bajo (sea nomad) community lives on houses built over the water. Some very basic guesthouses operate here at the lowest price point — IDR 150,000–250,000/night — but facilities are minimal and the area is furthest from the main tourist infrastructure. It suits budget travellers who want to experience a less packaged side of Labuan Bajo.
Bajawa (Coffee Highlands)
Bajawa sits 3.5 hours east of Labuan Bajo by road — a highland town at around 1,100 m elevation in a region known for its arabica coffee, traditional Ngada megalithic culture, and the active Inerie volcano. It is colder than the coast (bring a layer), markedly less touristy, and rewards a night or two for travellers crossing the island.
Accommodation in Bajawa is simple. The main guesthouses and small hotels run IDR 150,000–300,000/night for basic rooms with shared or private bathrooms. A few more comfortable mid-range options have opened in recent years in the IDR 300,000–500,000/night range. Meals are largely taken at warungs; a few cafés have improved significantly with the growing coffee tourism from visitors wanting to source Bajawa arabica directly.
Moni and Kelimutu
Moni is a small village 12 km north of Ende on the eastern end of Flores, at the foot of Mount Kelimutu — the volcano famous for its three differently coloured crater lakes, which shift colour over years due to changing chemical composition. Most visitors overnight in Moni to catch the pre-dawn Kelimutu sunrise.
Homestays and simple guesthouses in Moni run IDR 100,000–200,000/night for basic rooms with breakfast. Ara Inn and Kelimutu Crater Lakes Eco Lodge are two of the more reviewed options at slightly higher price points (IDR 200,000–400,000/night). Facilities are genuinely rustic — the village has irregular power, limited hot water, and no ATMs (the nearest is in Ende, 50 km south).
Entry to Kelimutu National Park costs approximately IDR 30,000 per person (2026). Most visitors hire a scooter or arrange transport with their guesthouse for the 4am pre-sunrise departure. The crater rim viewing area requires a 15-minute walk from the car park.
